If you follow my Instagram or Tik Tok (@tattooed.sister) then you have seen videos of this project from beginning to end. This painting is created using a watercolor pour method. If you are familiar to acrylic pour paintings, then this is similar, just with watercolor paint instead. The wording “Accept yourself love yourself” is traced and covered in a removable masking fluid. After coating the paper in a thin layer of water, I use pipettes to pour the paint. I use the three primary colors in the pour process, being careful to create secondary colors by blending and not overmixing into grey. Once I am happy with the result, I may or may not add more color to the painting use my handy dandy teeny tiny Windsor student watercolor set. The final stage is peeling off the masking fluid to reveal crisp, white lettering amidst a gentle rainbow of color. So satisfying.

My inspiration for this painting came from a video of a seemingly homeless man dancing with a carboard sign, chanting the words “Accept yourself. Love yourself. Accept yourself. Love yourself.”

It stuck with me. Words to live by. Words I needed and tried to sew into my character by repeating often. You cannot love yourself unless you accept all of who you are. You cannot accept all of who you are unless you learn to love yourself. Also, a bearded man dancing around in underoos chanting and being so unbothered by other’s opinions is very entertaining.

Then I learned how to pour watercolors and the rest is history. If you are in the central Arkansas region and would like some wonderful in-person lessons on watercolor, check out the Mid-Southern Watercolorists: midsouthernwatercolorists.com

This group brings in award-winning artists to teach amazing watercolor painting methods. I highly recommend.
